At Sobeys Inc., we are committed to being a leading advocate for change by ensuring that seafood supplies are available to meet the needs of our customers today and for generations to come. Our national Sustainable Seafood Policy goes beyond certification systems and eco-labels in order to "fix the worst first". We do this through determining the most challenged species, fisheries and fishing areas, and initiating and supporting improvement plans to effectively address the critical issues that affect our seafood sources.
We created the following video series from interviews with thought and industry leaders from Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Simon Fraser University, David Suzuki Foundation, Watershed Watch Salmon Society, suppliers and fishermen who discussed the improvements being made to managing wild British Columbia salmon. Their insights will provide you with an understanding of the types of challenges facing seafood stocks and the ocean ecosystem, the efforts being made to preserve wild salmon, and the plans to implement responsible sourcing initiatives and fishery improvements.

Sobeys Inc. produced the wild British Columbia salmon video series to help Canadians understand the challenges facing seafood species, fisheries and fishing areas and particularly, the efforts to preserve one of Canada’s most valuable seafood resources – wild salmon. As part of the implementation of Sobeys' Sustainable Seafood Policy, we have engaged suppliers to ensure they are aligned and participating in the wild B.C. salmon improvement plans and introduced them to our NGO sustainable seafood partner, Sustainable Fisheries Partnership, to provide additional expertise and resources to support improvements.
The videos will:
- Educate viewers on the complexity associated with seafood sustainability;
- Build awareness to the efforts to preserve wild B.C. salmon for future generations, including Fisheries and Oceans Canada's Wild Salmon Policy; and
- Build support and encourage the implementation of wild B.C. salmon improvements by Fisheries and Oceans Canada, the fishing industry and other key stakeholders.
As a result, we hope we have helped you become more informed about the challenges facing the seafood you eat and encouraged you to choose more sustainable seafood options.
