Reducing stores’ environmental impact
Reducing stores’ environmental impact
Sobeys Ontario
During the past year, Sobeys Ontario has undertaken a number of projects to further their ongoing commitment to energy conservation and waste reduction. These projects include:
- Replacing the 250/320/400 watt (HID) lamps at 46 stores with energy efficient T5 fluorescent tubes. This initiative is resulting in energy savings of approximately 6.9 million kWhs annually.
- Installing T5 50/50 lighting controls at 28 stores. These controls allow store management to turn off two of the four T5 bulbs in fixtures during times of the day when full store lighting is not needed. Combined, these installations are reducing electricity consumption by 1.4 million kWhs annually.
- Replacing the lighting in reach-in frozen food display cases at 25 stores from T8 fluorescent tubes to LED units. The energy savings from these projects will save 625,000 kWhs annually.
- Installing enhanced refrigerant leak detection systems at 20 locations which will enable us to quickly detect and take actions to correct refrigerant leaks. Due to the nature of this initiative (the minimization of refrigerant leaks), it will take time to quantify the leak reduction and its associated cost savings.
- Using Tower Composter® units which reduce the volume of the stores' organic waste by approximately 65%. The machines turn organic matter into an organic paste which can be used to make biogas. To date, these units are being used at 20 stores, with more being installed across the region each week.
