Supply chain food safety
Sobeys Quality Assurance program maintains quality and food safety throughout our supply chain through a three-tiered approach:
- Vendor management,
- Product management, and
- Non-conformance management.
Every vendor must agree to comply with the Sobeys’ quality assurance and food safety standards. To ensure compliance, Sobeys has an active food safety auditing program. All vendors are audited to defined and rigorous standards prior to becoming a manufacturer of Compliments products and at least once a year thereafter. We are also encouraging all of our vendors to adopt the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) harmonized international standards. Following a serious product quality or food safety non-conformance, Sobeys requires a third-party vendor audit to verify that effective corrective action has been taken. All third-party audits are approved by Sobeys and must be appropriate in scope, depth, applicability, auditor experience as well as routine oversight.
Product management is a major focus for Sobeys Quality Assurance. The success of the Compliments brand depends on introducing products that are compliant, safe and of high quality. All products launched under the Compliments brand must meet the full and complete product specifications, including ingredient disclosure, testing methodologies and limits, and food safety parameters. Sobeys Quality Assurance team performs product evaluations to ensure sensory standards and technical specifications are met and to assure consistent quality and the adherence to food safety standards.
When issues arise it is essential to effectively and efficiently address the concern and take action. As a result of an issue arising from a customer complaint or the product evaluation, the Sobeys Quality Assurance team will fully investigate the issue with our vendor partner to determine its validity, root cause and implement effective corrective actions. During investigations, Sobeys will initiate “holds” on product at the warehouses and store level if deemed appropriate to mitigate risk. If a product is determined to be non-compliant, it will be withdrawn from the warehouses and stores.
