The building of a new 14,121 square metre distribution centre in North Saanich, British Columbia, near the capital of Victoria, will commence in 2011 and is expected to be complete in 2012.

The distribution centre will be built following LEED® principles and will incorporate many of the same sustainable building design elements as those being implemented at the Terrebonne distribution centre.

Features unique to the North Saanich facility include:

  • Landscaping with local natural vegetation which reduces the need for irrigation
  • Use of variable-frequency drives (VFD) which conserves energy by enabling the facility to adjust motor speeds to match demand, rather than allowing the motors to run continuously at a constant speed regardless of demand
  • Polished concrete flooring which eliminates the need to use glues/adhesives that are required for other types of flooring
  • When used, carpet and paint will be low Volatile Organic Compound (VOC)
  • Where possible, bioswales – vegetated open channels designed to handle average amounts of storm water run-off – will be constructed. Bioswales have an under drain made of perforated pipe that intentionally promotes slowing, cleansing and infiltration of water.

Also, the waste heat generated by the facility's refrigeration system will be reclaimed to meet the entire building's heating needs; no external fuels or energy will be required.
